Professional background
Dr Irwin Pakula is the Medical Superintendent and a Psychiatrist at South Coast Private. He is a Clinical Associate Professor in the School of Medicine at the University of Wollongong. Dr Pakula first started work in the Illawarra in the late 70's. He moved shortly after to commence his training in Psychiatry at Kenmore Hospital in Goulburn.
After working in regional parts of NSW he moved back to the Illawarra. He has been a valued member of the Illawarra Health Services for over 30 years. His first role as an educator was supervising medical students in psychiatry and neurology for the University of Newcastle. He was the key driver in the implementation of a psychiatric postgraduate program in the Illawarra. Additionally, he was appointed Director of Mental Health Services for 11 years at Wollongong Hospital (ISLHD).
He is currently involved in teaching at the School of Medicine at the University of Wollongong. Dr Pakula became a psychiatrist because of his fascination with the human condition and the human mind. His passion for the field shows as he has been nominated and received a variety of awards.
Dr Pakula previously played Rugby Union for Easts and Rugby League for Bondi Sharks. In 2008 he was awarded the Local Hero of the Year award for the Illawarra for his contributions to mental health services.
