Professional background
Dr James Oldham is consultant psychiatrist at South Coast Private Hospital. He started his postgraduate medical career at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne in surgery and produced research for an MD, on how doctors make diagnoses in the Emergency Department.
Following this, he changed his clinical interest to psychiatry and commenced training at the Toronto General Hospital in Ontario and the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. His past roles include Private psychiatry Practice in Melbourne, NHS Specialist Child Psychiatry (London), Child Psychiatrist and Medical Director Alpha Hospitals Working (UK) and Clinical Director at Illawarra and Shoalhaven Local Health District.
He has a long-standing interest in the use of creative dance and art to explore who we are in the world and has studied with Anna Halprin in San Francisco. He has experience treating people in the public and private sectors, with Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Psychosis and Personality Disorder.
He is interested in working with patients who identify as having anxiety, depression or psychological trauma. He has a trauma informed, recovery-based practice that supports people making informed treatment choices for themselves.
Outside of his work, Dr Oldham enjoys gardening, art, music, dance and reading.
