Professional background
Dr Sunera Fernando is consultant psychiatrist at South Coast Private Hospital. Dr Fernando is an Honorary Clinical Associate Professor in Graduate School of Medicine at the University of Wollongong, a Conjoint Senior Lecturer at UNSW, Sydney and an Honorary Clinical Associate Professor at the Macquarie University in Sydney. She is currently a Consultant Psychiatrist at the Northshore Ryde Community Mental Health Service and has admitting rights to South Coast Private Hospital. She also works as a psychiatrist at the Blackdog Institute. She is a Visiting Honorary Research Fellow of the University of Wollongong.
Dr Fernando completed her doctorate at the University of Wollongong in 2010 with her thesis on Stigma and Mental Illness. Sunera has fifteen years' experience working in psychiatry. Having worked in the Illawarra Local Health District in the Nowra and Illawarra Community Health Services and Wollongong Hospital she is currently working in the Northern Sydney LHD. Her experience includes both inpatient and community setting including providing teleconference service to remote areas. Apart from her clinical work, Sunera is a committed teacher and enjoys training medical students and members of staff. She is an accredited teacher and has been an examiner at RANZCP and the OSCE exams held at the Graduate School of Medicine at UOW.
Sunera enjoys playing the piano, tennis and swimming regularly. She enjoys travelling and watching classical music concerts.
