Professional background
Dr Ratajkoski is a consultant psychiatrist with extensive experience in emergency psychiatry and adult psychiatric units within the Illawarra region. His work in the public sector has focused on the acute assessment and management of individuals experiencing severe psychiatric distress, often in high-pressure environments such as emergency departments and short-stay mental health units.
Dr Ratajkoski is committed to providing patient-centred care in complex clinical settings and has developed a particular interest in managing psychiatric emergencies, risk, and crisis presentations. His public health experience is complemented by a strong foundation in general adult psychiatry and collaborative care, with a focus on reducing suffering and promoting recovery through compassionate, evidence-based practice, including a combination of pharmacological and psychosocial interventions.
Before training as a psychiatrist, Dr Ratajkoski worked as a pharmacist. This background provides him with a comprehensive understanding of psychotropic medications, their interactions, and their role within broader treatment plans. It enhances his ability to safely and effectively manage complex pharmacological regimens, educate patients about their medications, and work closely with other healthcare professionals to ensure optimal outcomes.
In his outpatient practice, Dr Ratajkoski supports adults experiencing a range of mental health difficulties including, but not limited to, anxiety, psychotic, mood and personality disorders. He works collaboratively with patients and their families to develop tailored treatment plans that may incorporate psychological strategies, medication, and lifestyle interventions. His goal is to help individuals better understand their mental health, build resilience, and regain a sense of stability and wellbeing.
In addition to clinical care, Dr Ratajkoski contributes to the training and development of junior medical staff and psychiatrists in training. He is actively engaged in service improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality and responsiveness of psychiatric care services across the service.
