Seeing Mum Through New Eyes

Between studying psychology, balancing hobbies and working in patient administration at South Coast Private Hospital, Levi leads a busy life. But what makes his role at the hospital particularly special is the opportunity to work alongside his mum, Carol.

Although Levi admits he never intended to share the same workplace as his mum, he says the experience has given him a much deeper appreciation for the work she does.

“I’ve seen firsthand how hard she works, and that her role is often thankless, but no less essential,” Levi says.

“Seeing my mum in her day-to-day role also gave me a different perspective on what work really means. Many mothers do two jobs — paid work and domestic work — including cooking, cleaning and raising children.

“When I was a kid, I didn’t think much about that, but now as an adult, I see the extent of what she gave.”

Despite now working alongside his mum as an adult, Levi says some things haven’t changed.

“I’ve certainly never gone hungry when I forget my lunch,” he laughs. “Anyone who works with me would confirm my mum regularly appears around the reception desk to make sure I’ve eaten.

“I’m 24 and she still reminds me to drink milk for strong bones and finish my greens. I suppose some things never change, regardless of age.”

While he jokes about his mum’s caring nature, Levi says working together professionally, is inspiring.

“She comes from rather humble beginnings and I’m proud to see her in a management role running a well organised ship” he says. “She takes deep pride in keeping South Coast Private in impeccable condition and it is rewarding to see the care she puts into her work reflected in the workplace.”

On a personal level, Levi attributes many of his values and love of coffee, to his mum.

“She has taught me many things, how to be polite, have a strong work ethic, value manners and importantly develop a strong love for coffee,” he says.

“The older I get the more I recognise how much of who I have become has been shaped by her.”

For Carol, watching her son grow into his own person has been incredibly rewarding.

“It’s wonderful to see him happy and achieving his goals,” she says. “Seeing him take pride in his work and future is what every mother hopes for.”
